Chair, Councilor – Dr. Kathryn Kitzmiller

Kathryn Kitzmiller

Kathryn Kitzmiller is an Instructor of Chemistry in the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She received a B.S. in Chemistry in 2001 and a M.S. in Chemistry in 2004, both from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. Her Master’s work focused on the “Expression and Mechanistic Studies on Orotidine-5’-Monophosphate Decarboxylase”. In 2009, she completed her Ph.D. in Integrated Biomedical Science from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Her dissertation research investigated the “Variation of Complement Factor H and Mannan Binding Lectin in Human Systemic and Vascular Immune-Mediated Diseases”.

Kathryn’s past work includes serving as an Adjunct Faculty at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio and as a scientific writer in public relations and product marketing communications at Chemical Abstracts Services in Columbus, Ohio prior to joining Grand Canyon University as an Adjunct Faculty member. She joined Grand Canyon University as a full-time instructor in 2015.

Her interests include supporting and promoting interests in chemistry and chemical education, as well as traveling, spending time with family, and listening to audiobooks. She has been an active member in the Central Arizona local section of the ACS as Chair, Chair-elect, and Alternate Councilor since 2017.

Chair-Elect – Dr. Kim Horsley

Kimberly earned a B.S. in Biology, B.S. in Chemistry, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her PhD focused on using photon and electron spectroscopy to study the chemical and electronic properties of photovoltaic materials in the chalcogenide class. She then spent time as a postdoctoral fellow at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute synthesizing chalcopyrite solar cells for photoelectrochemical applications, before moving to Phoenix, Arizona. She is currently an instructor of chemistry at Grand Canyon University in the College of Science Engineering and Technology.

Treasurer – Dr. Jennifer A. Sniegowski

Jennifer Sniegowski earned a B.S. in Zoology (manga cum laude), and a M.S. in Anatomy from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Her dissertation research focused on the roles of the conserved residues in the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). She was also a postdoctoral researcher at the USDA’s ALARC facility working on protein-protein interaction studies before she became a faculty member at ASU.

She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus, where she teaches Chemistry and Biochemistry.  She has been an active member of the Central Arizona section of the ACS since 2011; serving previously as Chair and Secretary and has served in her current role as Treasurer since 2014.

Secretary – Dr. Christina Forbes

Christina Forbes is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Molecular Sciences at Arizona State University working with organometallic electrocatalysts that mimic hydrogenase enzymes. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Delaware (2016) examining structural control of peptides using non-covalent aromatic interactions. She worked as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Queensland as part of an NSF-EAPSI fellowship in 2013. She finished her B.S. in Chemistry from Delaware Valley College in 2009.

Christina has volunteered with CAZACS since 2017 serving on several committees, including Communications, Younger Chemists, Event Planning, and Outreach. She was awarded the 2019 ACS Outreach Volunteer of the Year for the Central Arizona local section.
